The author is a physician, hematologist, and pharmaceutical medical affairs executive whose career has spanned clinical medicine, scientific research, and the global pharmaceutical industry. He trained in medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California in Mexicali, Mexico. For his final year of mandatory Social Service, he was selected for a research position at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición Salvador Zubirán in Mexico City, a placement offered to 1% of medical graduates nationwide, where he co-authored his first peer-reviewed scientific paper before graduation. He completed postgraduate hematology training at the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, and the Centro Médico Nacional La Raza in Mexico City. After passing his boards, and for the next sixteen years, he practiced academic clinical medicine in Mexico, specializing in malignant hematology in both adults and children across the public hospital systems of Mexico City (IMSS and ISSSTE) and university hospital settings. He became the founding teacher and first hematology professor at the Universidad Panamericana Medical School in Mexico City, held an endowed research chair and served as Vice-Dean for Research and Innovation at Tecnológico de Monterrey Medical School in Monterrey, and led a hematopoietic stem cell transplant program. His laboratory focused on stem cell transplant immunology, especially graft-versus-host disease modulation. In the early 2000s, he led the effort to certify his hospital as an NMDP-accredited HSCT center in Mexico. He also served for several years as an examiner for the Mexican Board of Hematology. By the end of his clinical and scientific career, he had authored or co-authored about sixty peer-reviewed papers, co-written five books on hematology and bone marrow transplantation, filed a device patent, and developed a simplified -80°C cryopreservation technique for hematopoietic stem cells, which he published and taught to hospitals in developing countries. In 2010, he left clinical practice to enter the pharmaceutical industry. Over the past sixteen years, he has held local, regional, and global medical affairs leadership roles in oncology, hematology, immunology, and CAR-T cell therapy at companies headquartered in Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, and Japan, including both multinational and mid-size specialty pharmaceutical organizations. He has led medical affairs functions at country, regional, and global levels across Latin America, Europe, the United States, and international markets in Asia- Pacific, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has managed teams ranging from single-country MSLs to large global organizations.
He was a co-lead of the MAPS Latin America chapter, is fluent Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and has lived and worked in Mexico, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters, and he also has a dog with whom he has a contentious relationship.
